Technology, high-performance & burnout – Taking mindful charge of yourself, your phone & your devices

This training program focuses on mindful technology use, high-performance, and preventing burnout in the information age. It consists of six sessions, each with specific mindfulness practices and content

Overview: Living in the information age, and surrounded by devices such as our phones & computer makes conscious living even more important than it was in previous ages. However, technology also makes it even more difficult to live consciously than before due to the availability of distractions and the ‘dopamine hit’ we get from continually checking our screens. This training focuses on practices to optimize our ability to use our devices to work productively as well as happily, & avoid the mental burnout/cognitive overload that comes from sub-optimal technology use.

This is a six-session program, each session includes:

  • A mindfulness practice around your devices
  • A mindfulness practice for mastering your mental attention more effectively
  • A practice for relaxing & regenerating your energy

The course content:

Module 1: Making friends, & creating boundaries with your phone: Four ways of being mindful with your handphone

Module 2: Fishing without a hook – Avoiding & recovering from cognitive overload

Module 3: Becoming your own inner CEO & your life as a retreat, your work as meditation

Module 4: Technology & why mindfulness is now a necessary skill

Module 5: Your most precious ‘high-tech device’ – Protecting & nurturing your brain

Module 6: Creative freedom or slavery? – Mastering the opportunity (& countering the tyranny of) information freedom

Details of each module:

Module 1: Making friends, & creating boundaries with your phone: Four ways of being mindful with your handphone

This first session covers an overall introduction to the practice of mindfulness, offering simple & effective methods to make your phone your mindful friend & ally in the pursuit of both productivity & wellness.

  • Learn why mindful people tend to be happier & more productive
  • Relate to your phone in new & calming ways
  • Combine getting good at mindfulness with the everyday use of your phone

Module 2: Fishing without a hook – Avoiding & recovering from cognitive overload

Most of us are not manual workers these days, we are mind workers. However, despite the relative lack of physical exercise well suffer from exhaustion, not physical but mental! This mental exhaustion is called cognitive overload. This module focused on practices to overcome cognitive overload, avoid it in the future, and keep our mind sharp, keen & eager in the workplace!

  • Identify the causes & of cognitive overload so you can push yourself hard without burning out
  • Learn how to think-less & practice non-doing for short periods of time
  • Recharge your inner battery faster by paying attention to your mood!

Module 3: Technology & why mindfulness is now a necessary skill

Session three looks at the challenges of having technology always at our finger-tips, & how without mindfulness we run the risk of becoming slaves to our tools, rather than their master, with real consequences to wellbeing & work-task effectiveness. Practices include:

  • Using tech to increase rather than decrease your focus power
  • Preventing bad posture & physical problems from phone & computer use
  • Ways of being with ourself that invite mature use of devices

Module 4: Becoming your own inner CEO, & your life as a retreat, your work as meditation

Companies have Chief Executive officers to co-ordinate & direct the running of the company. Similarly, our conscious mind is the CEO of our body-mind & the different functions of our consciousness. It is it’s job to co-ordinate the different elements of the self into a healthy, functioning whole, & take charge of the way in which we integrate technology. This module looks at:

  • How we can develop an effective & powerful inner CEO
  • How to work with your to-do list when there is too much on it all the time
  • How to approach your work life like a monk in a retreat
  • Visualization techniques for developing mindful flow in your work & life

Module 5: Your most precious ‘high-tech device’ – Protecting & nurturing your brain –

Our most valuable ‘technology’ & high-tech tool is our brain. In this session we learn practices to:

  • Value and take care of our brain
  • Use it in a way that helps us feel energised, motivated & invites productivity
  • Combat our addiction to stimulation – Identify & re-wire unhealthy patterns that make it difficult for our brain to help us thrive

Module 6: Creative freedom or slavery? – Mastering the opportunity of (& countering the tyranny of) information freedom

This session looks at the opportunity & challenge of the information age in terms of choices in the face of ‘infinite’ information. We look at practices to:

  • Build concentration & focus in our day in the face of the many distractions
  • Make choices mindfully & effectively
  • Identify & harness the most powerful creative inner force within you & direct it toward your own creative productivity

Ways in which the program can be delivered:

  • As a 6-7 module program as described above
  • As a full day workshop or off-site retreat
  • As a one-off session or keynote (45-90mins) session, with tailored content curated for your specific needs

  • Recordings of the mindfulness & meditation exercises covered for personal practice
  • Articles for further reading
