In a sentence: Learn how you can use mindfulness to discover & relate to the child-self that lies within you for the purposes of both therapeutic healing & personal thriving.
Overview: Our child-self, or inner-child is a part of our psyche. You could say it has three aspects:
- That part of us that is simply child-like in nature; playful, naive, creative, innocent, gullible, needs looking after & so on
- The historical child, that is the child within us whose character has been shaped & informed by our own literal historical upbringing; experience with parents, peers & other significant others, what happened to us in school, how we were treated, learned to gain approval & so on. The child within us now that is a product of our personal historical experience, & our response to that
- The spiritual child within us – that part of us that is ever young, ever new, ever creative, ever both innocent & wise, whose light helps us begin again each time we burn out.
A psychological definition:
“The child-self is the component of the psyche containing the “personality” of the child one once was, with that child’s range of values, emotions, needs & responses; not a generic child or universal archetype, but a specific, historical child, unique to an individual’s history & development.” – Nathaniel Branden, definition taken from the Six Pillars of Self Esteem, page 265ff.
Our child-self is important because its health or not plays a large part in our overall sense of psychological wellbeing. In health it gives us energy, joy, creativity & resilience. Unhealed or alienated, our child-self can hold us back from our potential, cause inner chaos, & keep us trapped in negative cycles of emotional repetition.
In this workshop you will learn experiential mindfulness exercises to:
- Connect with & get to know your child-self
- Work with unhealed & wounded elements of your child-self
- Relate to the healthy, energized & joyful dimension of your inner-child
- Understand inner-child work within the context of the psychological-self in general, & our ‘inner family’ in particular
Some of the exercises will be sitting mindfulness, exercises, others will be written. There will be time for discussion, & Q&A, as well as clear instructions regarding how you can continue the inner child work after the end of the workshop, using the materials provided.
This workshop relates to Toby’s Mindful Self-Knowledge Program, which is designed by Toby to facilitate your own personal mindful self-discovery process.
