Ancestral Banyan TreeMeditations for Activating, Healing and Awakening our Ancestral Karma

Date & Time: Sunday December 7th, 9.30am-12.30pm

Location: Basic Essence, 501 Bukit Timah Road
#04-04 Cluny Court, Click HERE to see map of location.

In a sentence: Enrich, deepen & stabilize your inner and outer life by creating a living connection to your close and distant ancestors through meditation.

Overview: In ancient cultures the ancestors were seen as a spiritual guiding force who overlighted, advised, supported and protected us in our life’s journey as an individual, as a family and as a tribe. They also provided a context within which people could evaluate their life and work, as well as reference points for us in our inner growth and quest for enlightenment and inner wholeness.

This workshop explores relevant and living ways in which we can connect to our own ancestral inheritance in a manner that is appropriate for and empowering to our contemporary lives.

In particular the classes will offer practical meditations to:

  • Engage in  a living communion with both our close (recent in time) and ancient (distant in time) ancestors
  • Heal damaged or imbalanced ancestral karma that we may have inherited
  • Awaken fully to the gifts and potentials (spiritual, psychological and material) that our ancestral karma has to offer us

Summary structure of the workshop: Here is a review of the meditations that we will be doing. There will be time in between the meditations for discussion, writing down experiences and receiving guidance and clear instructions from Toby.

  • Meditation 1 – Connecting to our distance ancestors, receiving their gifts and releasing their burdens
  • Meditation 2 – Connecting to our close ancestors; receiving their gifts and releasing their burdens
  • Mediation 3 – Meditating with the two rivers of ancestral karma within us; The rivers of blood and the river of light, connecting to our future ancestors
  • Meditation 4 – Connecting to the three voices of our ancestors, the many, the wise and the one

Meditations for Developing a Mind of Ease, Relaxed Concentration and Positive Intention – A Five Module Online Course

Beautiful Spring

Cost of Workshop: Sing$$75

Time: This is a five module online course, those participating will be given the link to the course webpage plus a password, after which they can do the course at a pace that is suitable and convenient for them.

Venue: Anyone from anywhere in the world can participate in this course from the comfort of their living room. All you need is online access!

One sentence summary: This five module online course offers a contemporary, practical introduction to meditation and mindfulness that aims to integrate the fundamentals of traditional meditation practice with contemporary insights from psychology and neuro-psychology in a powerful and effective way.

Meditation and mindfulness are, simply put, ways of training our mind and attention to focus consciously upon objects that give rise to inner wellbeing, harmony, and happiness.

Listen to Toby talking about the Mind of Ease Practices:

What you will learn on this course:

Practical meditation and mindfulness techniques that:

  • Enable you to consciously release unwanted tension and anxiety from your body-mind and transform your relationship to stress.
  • Help you to build a warm, friendly and supportive relationship to both yourself and others
  • Train your mind to take in, focus upon and appreciate the positive in your life
  • Develop your concentration skills (the ability to focus one-pointedly upon a single object/task), and in particular a special type of relaxed concentration, or lucid awareness
  • Enable you to connect with and relax deeply into an experience of inner stillness
  • An increased capacity to use your mind effectively without getting overwhelmed by mental busy-ness

All of these skills can be consolidated into a daily meditation practice that can be done in ten minutes!

The Structure of the course:

Thursday October 23rd – Module 1: Meditating on Ease, Flow and Presence – This opening module looks at how to create an experience of deep mind-body relaxation and flow by:

  • Connecting to three levels of ease and safety (physical, mental and spiritual)
  • Understanding  how to release stress and tension that accumulates in our mind and body during the day and re-energize our body through focus on the breathing
  • Learn how to orient our mind in the present moment, giving our life a deeper sense of centeredness and balance even when experiencing challenges

Thursday October 30th – Module 2:  Meditating on Warmth, Friendship and Care – The meditation tools taught in this module aim firstly at learning to direct feelings of warmth, friendship and support toward the person whom we spend 24 hours of our day with; ourself! Once we have developed a stable, friendly and harmonious relationship to ourself, we can then expand and develop our feelings of warmth and care toward others; our family, our friends, all humans and eventually to all living beings. Achieving a stable experience of love, warmth and compassion is only possible with a very stable inner base, and this stable base is what we focus upon mindfully developing in this module.

Thursday 6th November – Module 3: Meditating on Appreciation, Positivity and Enjoyment

The ability to consistently approach challenges and events in our life from a positive and appreciative perspective is an essential mindfulness tool for enjoying our life deeply. All too often we lose sight of the good things that are right in front of us because our mind is pre-occupied and obsessed with the things we perceive as “wrong”. The methods taught in this module aim to address our natural “negativity bias”, and create strong mental habits that facilitate feelings of appreciation, gratitude and enjoyment.

Thursday 13th November – Module 4: Developing Focus and Concentration through Meditation – A fragmented, distracted state of mind seems to be the norm in the midst of our current, frantic pace of life. The meditation techniques taught in this module specifically address how we can develop the skill of focused, lucid concentration amidst all the distractions and busyness that calls for our attention. Developing focus and concentration not only has the benefit of making us more effective in achieving our goals, it also gives us access to an experience of deep regenerative peace that we can rest in as we travel our life’s many and varied pathways.

Thursday 20th November – Module 5: Meditating for Inner Stillness and Insight – This module focuses on how we can discover the natural “inner stillness” and silence of our mind and experience what a profound and life changing effect it can have  upon the quality of our life. We learn the skill of resting easy in the natural inner space of our own awareness, and the discovery of a deeper level of ourself known in meditation terms as the “bare witness observer”. On a simple level the discovery of inner stillness and the bare witness observer enables us to meet our daily challenge with greater equanimity and presence of mind. On a deeper level inner stillness and the inner witness opens us to a deeper level of meaning and context for our life, awakening us to a new dimension of who we are and what we might be capable of becoming.

This final module also introduces an integrated meditation practice that combines the skills of all five modules into a single short meditation.

Mixed Mindfulness Arts, Animals and Starlight, Developing Neuroflow

First time to go to our welcome page.

Dear Integral Meditators,
If you look at the martial arts scene these days you will see that a lot of the top guys are mixed martial artists, that is to say that they have trained in and mastered more than one form of martial arts, and this has made them better overall. Similarly training in complementary meditation and mindfulness styles can have a great effect upon your personal growth, more than training in just one. With this in mind I have edited and updated an older article below on how to meditate with animals and landscape. It is a very old form of meditation that people have been doing for thousands of years, and has a lot to offer us in today’s very urbanized society!

Similarly I would like to sincerely recommend that if you are in Singapore next Sunday 31st September in the morning, then do consider coming along to my meditation workshop The Call of the Wild–Meditations for Deepening Your Inner Connection to the Animal Kingdom and the Green-world where I will be teaching this meditation method in a very practical and relatively easy to apply way.

Finally, another practice that I have gotten a HUGE amount out of over the last year, and that continues to be a great support and strengthener for my mindfulness practice and personal growth in general is the brain-entrainment and bio-field technology tracks fromI-Awake. They have got a new product, Neuroflow out just a few days ago, which I am posting some information on immediately below. As it has only just come out, I have only had it a few days myself, but I have already had a great experience with it!

Yours in the spirit of mixing and flowing,

NeuroFlow is for:

Balanced, relaxed focus when you need to for work, for study, for play.
Deeply relaxing after intense focus or to de-stress..or to just chill.
Energizing, feeling good, getting “high”
Generating creative flow for work, writing, art, expression
Flowing with your life and your world in all its richness and possibility and aliveness. It is on a special launch promotion of over 20% off until August 28th. Click on the link to listen to the free samlple track and find out more.

Meditating with Animals and Starlight – Shamanic Journeying

Meditating with animals and animal spirits is one of the main practices found in ancient shamanic traditions worldwide. The ancient shamans were really the pioneers of the first meditation techniques and these techniques (which are mainly the technique of “inner world journeying”) are deeply embedded within the psyche of human beings, including you and me. The result of this is that most people who actually try shamanic meditation techniques actually find that they are able to gain some success quite quickly. Michael Harner, one of the pioneers of modern proto-shamanism reports that fully 85% of people participating in his shamanic journeying workshops are able to gain tangible results and experiences from their first attempts at journeying meditation (The only caveat to that would be that these people chose to attend the workshop, so in a sense they may have ‘self-selected based upon their innate aptitude and interest).

As mentioned above, the main meditation “technique” found in shamanism is the “inner world journey” where contact with animal and ancestral spirits is sought for the purposes of gaining guidance, wisdom and healing. When meditating with animals and animal guides the sequence of the meditations would tend to go something like this:

  1. The shaman (or you and I if we are choosing to meditate in this way) goes on a journey, either within his imagination, or actually physically into a landscape to meet his or her animal guide.
  2. Once the specific animal has been contacted, the shaman requests to be taught or shown the wisdom or healing method that the animal has to impart to him.  There then follows a communion between human and animal, trust is hopefully gained and the relationship proceeds. It should be noted that the animal chooses the shaman, not vice-versa. If you are met by an ant or a rat when you wanted a lion you cannot do a trade in! Experience will show you that in reality the animal that comes is invariably the best one for you and for the job at hand!
  3. A series of meditations can then be embarked upon where the mediator then goes on journeys and receives teachings, techniques and insights from the animal. Initially the meditator travels WITH the animal, but over time s/he may feel as if he is merging with the animal’s body and actually BECOMING the animal for periods of time.
  4. Over time a stable working relationship is established with the animal spirit which is mutually enriching for both parties, and the wisdom and abilities of the animal are imparted to the meditator.

What “abilities” and wisdom do you get from an animal guide?
The way in which animal guides impart wisdom is non-intellectual, experiential and mainly done through images. To take an example, if your guide is a spider, and in meditation you experience what it is like to have eight sensitive legs picking up information from all directions around you then this will give you a heightened awareness of your inner sense of touch which you can apply to appropriate life situations and challenges.

Starlight meditation with a pigeon
One animal that I developed a relationship with around the the beginning of 2010 for a period of months is the pink necked green pigeon a number of which used to hang out in the park near my office. My animal journeying-type meditations are mostly spontaneous these days, done whilst napping or just sitting having a quiet moment. Animal journeying really just becomes an integral part of life once you have been doing it a while. So anyway, here a journey that I experienced with the above mentioned green pigeon that I recorded at the time :
I am having a ten minute meditation break in my office. My mind becomes quiet and tranquil. Quite suddenly I feel myself to be sitting in the next door park, staring up at a tree, where the green pigeon is sitting looking at me. After an initial contact we fly up into the sky going high above the cloudline.
With the clouds below us and the blue sky above, I become aware of rays of starlight flowing down from the heavens, bathing our bodies in white light. The rest of the meditation is then spent simply enjoying the starlight, absorbing it and being it. We then fly back down to the park, the vision breaks apart and I am sitting in my office meditating. I say thankyou to the green pigeon and get on with my day!

For many people the idea of meditating in this way may seem a bit far-fetched.

However there is HUGE value for urbanized humans to do this type of meditation, as it re-connects us to a truly living relationship with nature and animals. The other thing that we discover is that it is actually quite not difficult, it is just a matter of re-awakening our visualization and imaginative skills, and pointing them in the right direction.

A Free Audio Meditation on Self-Trust

Raven and Niel Gaiman QuoteDear Integral Meditators,

Goethe said “If you trust yourself you will know how to live”. More than  that, our trust and confidence in ourself directly affects the way in which we experience our relationship to the world at large, as Emerson said “If I have lost confidence in myself, I have the universe against me.”

This is a short five minute guided meditation on how to develop and sustain deep trust in yourself. En joy!

The workshop was excellent! I really enjoyed not only the content, but also the process. I found the explanation and insights to be truly insightful and informative. Thanks so much!

Really enjoyed the whole workshop – The focus that the sentence completion allowed me to have about my views & thoughts and feelings , plus the really helpful practical experience of the meditation exercises.
